Marty Whelan rules out BBC move as he shares ‘no regrets’ over RTÉ loyalty
The legendary broadcaster is staying put in Montrose, admitting that while the bright lights of the BBC once beckoned, he’s happy he stuck with the home team.

Marty Whelan has officially poured cold water on any lingering dreams of a move to the BBC, confirming he has "no regrets" about spending his legendary career at RTÉ. The veteran broadcaster, who was recently inducted into the IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame, admitted he did once weigh up a hop across the pond but ultimately decided that staying in Ireland was the right call.
According to RSVP Live, the 70-year-old Lyric FM host reflected on his long stint with the national broadcaster, noting that his loyalty has been rewarded with a career that spanned everything from the Eurovision to Winning Streak. While he joked that he wouldn’t mind a bit more in his pay packet, he’s clearly not packing his bags for London anytime soon.
The broadcaster’s Hall of Fame induction on November 4, 2026, served as a moment of reflection on a career that survived the "scary" collapse of Century Radio in the 90s. Despite the occasional career knock, Marty told the press he remains "young at heart" and has no plans to retire, proving that the mustache of Montrose is here to stay.
