It’s a historic morning for Keisha Lance Bottoms, who has been projected as the winner of the Georgia gubernatorial race. The former Atlanta mayor didn’t just win the keys to the mansion; she’s become the first Black woman ever elected governor in United States history, according to CBS News.

In what was a nail-biting showdown, Bottoms managed to flip the state for the Democrats for the first time since 1998. She saw off a challenge from Republican billionaire Rick Jackson, who reportedly poured a staggering $200 million of his own fortune into his campaign, according to the Associated Press.

During her victory party in Atlanta, the newly minted Governor-elect told a cheering crowd that Georgia had "sent a message loud and clear" that the state wants progress over division, according to The Washington Post. The win is being hailed as a major political earthquake that ends over two decades of Republican control in the state's top office.

Bottoms, who previously served as a senior advisor to Joe Biden, focused her campaign on health care and voting rights. She’s set to succeed Governor Brian Kemp, who was barred by law from seeking a third term. It’s a massive result for the Democrats, who also saw Senator Jon Ossoff cruise to reelection on the same night.
